Major media companies were a feared organ on the internet at their inception. (Section 230 is a reaction to this in part but inverted: the govt was also afraid of media companies and the clout they would have, so eliminated many features in the spirit of "comments sections")
The .COM boom led to an initial creation of top-level domains (think .com, .net, .gov, and so forth). Because a limited amount of players controlled the internet, this was initially fine (in mainstream circles). But after about 15 years, the larger array of higher-level domains opened up (nowadays there are hundreds of (DOT). (WHATEVER)).
.XXX is a prime example of a move by the user, creators, and legislative action to define a "domain." But isn't.
The biggest takeaway is that modern Gen Z (Zoomers?) tend to think that anyone older than 24 is "ancient" and doesn't know what a meme is. In my mind, this Net.Art idea has matured into modern 21st-century memedom. Websites such as knowyourmeme.com provide backstories to cultural references in the 80s that somehow make it to today.
Reddit has entire pages devoted to just specific types of Art.Net style artwork, r/prequelmemes for Star Wars is an example of the same kinds of ideals that made the late 90's art "viral" (before that was a word).
This entire article just made me think about how ASCII art has also morphed into some interesting expression not specifically for posting but for raw communications. I. Can post some in the blog to highlight that, but then further morphed into emoji communications. Entire Reddit's exist to reinforce the idea of "copypasta," which is ridiculous and glorious messages to send to friends.
It's more than memes and raw art, and it is transforming how we live and communicate: memes make sense, memes convey a thousand words instantly and can make you laugh on the spot. The best part is there are memes only YOU and your friends get because you can make them so quickly, and they can be so custom to who you are and how you talk to.
Memes become sub-memes, which is an art in and to itself. This article is merely describing without knowing what art the internet could provide. Politics? Yes. School? Yes. Rage against the establishment? Yes. All of it started as something a select few could access, from a select few who could access that, to a ubiquitous language that makes me think maybe the Egyptians had it right.
